What Is a Funding Rate Heatmap?

Perpetual futures pay funding between longs and shorts to keep the contract close to spot. A positive rate means longs pay shorts, a negative rate means shorts pay longs, and the size of the rate shows how one-sided the market is.

Looking at one coin at a time hides the bigger picture. The heatmap puts the most traded perpetuals next to each other on the same 8 hour grid, so you can see whether the whole market is leaning one way or a single coin is overheating.

How Traders Use the Funding Heatmap

Spot Crowded Trades

A coin that stays deep in one color for days has one side paying to stay in. That is where squeezes come from.

Read Market Sentiment

When most rows turn the same color at once, the whole market is leaning one way. A sudden flip shows sentiment changing.

Know the Cost of Holding

The annualized rate next to each coin shows what a position costs, or earns, if funding stays where it is.

Funding Heatmap FAQ

What is a funding rate?

Perpetual futures have no expiry, so exchanges keep their price close to spot with a funding payment between longs and shorts. When the rate is positive, longs pay shorts; when it is negative, shorts pay longs. Most coins settle every 8 hours, some every 4 hours or every hour.

What does the funding heatmap show?

Each row is a coin and each column an 8 hour period. The color shows the funding rate in that period, so you can see at a glance which coins are crowded on one side and how long that has lasted. Coins that settle more often are aggregated to the same 8 hour grid.

How do traders use funding rates?

Funding is a read on positioning. Persistently high positive funding means longs are crowded and paying to stay in, which can set up a long squeeze. Deeply negative funding means shorts are crowded, which can fuel a short squeeze. Funding alone is not a signal, but it shows who is under pressure.

Where does the data come from?

Funding history comes from Binance USDT perpetual futures. The free preview shows the largest coins; Pro shows the 50 most traded perpetuals by 24 hour volume. The annualized rate next to each coin assumes three settlements a day.
